Interview with IN2 team member: Responsibility and perseverance are the recipe for success

Jasna Slivnjak dugogodišnja je IN2-ovka koja će reći da je tu došla steći nešto iskustva, a onda se ipak zadržala 😊 Povodom Međunarodnog dana žena, razgovarali smo s Jasnom o njenom poslu, pristupu radu, ali i o tome jesu li žene u poslovnom svijetu danas zaista ravnopravne muškarcima.

Let’s start with the usual questions: how did your development career go, how long have you been working at IN2?

I started working at IN2 in July 2009, to which I would now say "oh my gosh, I've been here for almost 12 years". I came to IN2 (my second job) to learn a job or at least part of it, to grow, so that it could develop further and further, probably somewhere else. But I'm still here. My job doesn’t sound extra interesting to other people. People on the sidelines (and my friends of course) perceive my job as something extremely boring, tedious and incomprehensible, but I manage it and find myself in it. My good friend says - you have to know well (anything in life) to love it. The more I know and the more confident I am in my knowledge, the more I like to do it. I am currently in the position of independent accountant with the emphasis on income from employment. The area is quite sensitive, and the responsibility goes with it. I cooperate with all departments within the company, mostly with HR and external institutions such as the Tax Administration, FINA, HZZO, HZMO, banks and audit firms. 

Why do you like working at IN2?

I love my job, I love the team I work with and I still have room to develop! 

You recently received the BestIN2 award for special contribution to the company. Although the expert commission made the final decision, you were nominated by the colleagues with whom you work the most. Can you share with us some of your recipe for good teamwork?

The BestIN2 award is an award I will remember, I am sure, for the rest of my life. It is nice to know that your colleagues, and then the expert commission, appreciate you and that your name stands out among about three hundred people. Recipe for teamwork: there are basic things that each of us should adhere to, and for me it is assertive behavior towards every person in the team, every co-worker and a responsible and focused approach to each task. To these basic things, everyone adds their own uniqueness, enthusiasm, and success is guaranteed. 

What are the typical challenges at your job? How do you overcome them?

The challenge is when a case comes up that I know nothing about or a situation I haven’t found myself in so far. When I bite in and immerse myself in unraveling the solution, I lose track of time, I forget I didn’t have lunch, I literally stand on my head until I resolve the situation. I’m pretty persistent, but I think that’s a virtue in my job. 

Do you have any tricks to make less interesting business activities interesting? How to turn a difficult day in a positive direction?

There are always better and worse days, successful and less successful, some jobs or tasks are more interesting, some less interesting, but that's how everything is in life. It is important to know that no situation lasts forever, that is, that the sun always comes after the rain (true, sometimes we wait a little longer for that sun, but we always wait). That's how I handle "boring" jobs - I try to do them regularly, so that my "boredom" doesn't accumulate because I have to do it anyway. I always approach everything positively; I don’t waste energy on what I can’t change.

What characteristics of desirable employers would you single out as the most important? What is most important to you in the workplace?

I would single out the opportunity for learning, development, advancement, then a stimulating work environment and respect for the individual. A good boss and a good salary go without saying, I don’t need to stress that much. 

What do you value most in colleagues and what in superiors?

Among my colleagues, I value open communication and mutual respect the most. With superiors, good organizational skills, expertise, professional attitude towards work, but also humanity. 

How do you spend your free time?

I like to spend my free time in nature, in the woods, on the mountains, in all weather conditions. There is no bad weather for me, just bad equipment! I also love to travel, I must admit, I already miss that quite a bit considering the current covid situation. 

These days we are celebrating International Women's Day, so let's talk a little about women and work. Do you think women still find it harder to advance in their careers than men? What are your experiences?

I think it is, no matter that we are in the 21st century and that a lot has already changed. Personally, I have not had any bad experiences, but I am also aware of the fact that this is so because my sector is not an area of ​​interest of the opposite sex. 

What are your experiences working in an IT company, which is still considered a predominantly "male" industry?

Positive for now, because we have made a lot of progress as a society, but we still have a lot to do. Unfortunately, we still experience some things as "men's" or "women's" jobs in a stereotypical way, and many times we may unconsciously react in accordance with the stereotype. 

The theme of this year's International Women's Day is "women and leadership". Do women today have enough opportunities to develop into leaders in their activities compared to their male counterparts?

I think they have the opportunity, but for the same thing, especially if it belongs to the "male" activity, they must prove themselves much more. 

Do you think there are activities or business areas where women have better predispositions or are more skilled at doing a job? If so, which ones?

There is, I would point out, that women can multitask, they have an eye for detail, they are more persistent, and they can use all that in any activity to stand by the side of every man. 

If you could introduce some measure at the national level, what would you suggest to achieve greater equality between men and women in the workplace?

Something very simple and cheap, without a lot of philosophy - a quantitative comparison of two individuals on the same job as a double-blind experiment. 

Lastly, what would you say to today’s girls or girls who have yet to decide on their calling?

Choose and fight for what you want, regardless of the barriers, do not give up on your dreams.
